Normally, you'd take them back to the optician who made them and they check the fitting and make sure there were no errors in manufacturing. Suppose you buy glasses online and you feel like you can't see too well out of them. By asking your optometrist to measure your PD, it muddies the liability of the glasses a bit. This way, it's clear which party is responsible if the glasses aren't working great when they come back. to measure your refractive error and for the optician (the guy who sells your glasses) to measure your PD. The standard industry practice is for the O.D. It might seem as simple as doing a 2 second measurement but there is a underlying liability undertaking involved in that measurement. I honestly wouldn't expect you to understand because you don't know what goes into making a good pair of glasses. The discussion around PD is a lot more nuanced and complex than you'd think. Now that I am more clear on who does what, I can better communicate to my care providers in the future about what I need and what I’m looking for. It’s always been bundled for me, so I didn’t realize they were separate. I have made some adjustments to my thinking-I didn’t realize the optometrist is ONLY there to check for disease and give you a prescription for the lenses. 🤓Īfter the exam, I was sent to the optician, who of course wanted me to buy their overpriced frames/lenses, and then when I pushed for just the PD numbers, they gave me a sticky note and said they wouldn’t write it down for me, but that they’d give it to me. She told me “all I do is the eye exam.” Then I asked what a Prism was, and she said “are you trying to buy your glasses online?” Yes, in 2021, I am looking for trendy and cost conscious glasses online, lmao.
